Traffic impact for Speed Classic Cape Town

Cape Town is hosting the Speed Classic Cape Town, the Mother City’s first hill climb in over 60 years, this weekend. The City of Cape Town would like to advise residents and motorists on traffic impact, and logistical arrangements.
Speed Classic Cape Town is taking place on Philip Kgosana Drive on Saturday, 25 and Sunday, 26 October 2025.
The event will transform a stretch of Philip Kgosana Drive into a 1,8 km motorsport track for a two-day festival featuring historic cars, racing cars and supercars.
To undertake the work of transforming the road to a track for event day, including putting up safety barriers on the road, Philip Kgosana Drive will be closed off to traffic in the evenings to continue the work that started on Sunday, 19 October.
The outbound lane will be closed to traffic from 19:00 – 05:00 daily on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The inbound lane will remain open to traffic on these days.
From Thursday, 23 October until Sunday, 26 October, both the inbound and outbound lanes will be closed to traffic all day.
The inbound lane will be open from 05:00 on Monday, 27 October to allow traffic flowing into the city but the outbound lane will remain closed.
The City encourages matric candidates attending schools in the City Bowl and surrounds to allow additional time to get to their exams this week, so that they arrive on time and are in the best possible mindset to write their exams.
‘Quite a lot of work must be done to ensure that the event is safe, and this includes putting up concrete barriers and other protective apparatus. This will require closure of the outbound lane for extended periods this coming week. These measures are in place to ensure the safety of motorists as well as the construction crew undertaking the work on the road. We would like to thank residents in the affected areas for their understanding and make a plea to motorists to bear with us during this period. Traffic diversions via alternative routes will be in place to ensure that those who normally use Philip Kgosana Drive can still reach their destinations on time.
‘Since August, Speed Classic Cape Town organisers have consulted ward councillors, ratepayers’ associations, businesses, and the CCID. The latest meeting, an online webinar was held last Wednesday with residents from surrounding communities. While we recognise the inconvenience such events may cause, they play a vital role in creating jobs and boosting the local economy,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Traffic Diversions
Due to the closures for the event build-up, race weekend and removal of structures post-event, motorists will be advised to take note of the diversions.
With Philip Kgosana Drive closed to traffic on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the following routes are safe to take:
• N1 incoming and outgoing
• N2 outgoing, via the City Centre and Nelson Mandela Boulevard (including Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard connections)
• N2 incoming, diverting onto Nelson Mandela Boulevard and taking the Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard exits.

Parking
There is limited parking at the race village and surrounds. Spectators are advised that shuttles will be provided to transport them from these designated parking areas to the venue.
Free parking is available at the Civic Centre, with a shuttle taking spectators to the venue.
There is also designated parking at the Good Hope Seminary Junior School on Vredehoek Avenue, and guests will be shuttled to the event entrance.
Those using e-hailing services to get to the venue are advised to set their drop off at Gardens Centre and 25 Jutland Avenue, Devils Peak Estate for hospitality ticket holders.
Gates open at 07:00 and the festival runs until 19:00 on Saturday, 25 October while Sunday’s programme begins at 08:00 and goes on until 19:00.
